Ярмо Мякиля родился в Рауме, Финляндия, в 1952 году.

Живет и работает в Хельсинки, Финляндия.

Его творческая карьера началась в 1970-х годах. Он учился в Школе искусств и дизайна Хельсинского университета и в Финской Академии художеств, где преподавал впоследствии. В ранних работах Мякиля нашли отражение политические движения и радикальная атмосфера конца 1960-х — начала 1970-х годов: он писал реалистические картины в темных, сумрачных тонах и часто обращался к темам жизни рабочего класса. Позже в его работах нашли отражение сюжеты из истории искусства, эстетика комикса, рок-н-ролльная традиция и образы современного кинематографа. В 80-е он исследовал в своем творчестве поп-культуру и феномен общества потребления. Способность Мякила соединять медийные изображения с мифологическими темами сделала его одним из самых значительных художников финского постмодерна.

Последние 40 лет Ярмо Мякила активно работает на международном уровне. Его живописные и скульптурные произведения выставляются в музеях и галереях в Финляндии, Америки и Франции, демонстрируются на крупных международных художественных ярмарках. В 2002 году Мякила был награжден медалью Pro Finlandia, одной из самых важных финских наград в области культуры и искусства, и номинирован на Carnegie Art Award (2011 год). Работы Ярмо Мякила представлены в коллекциях наиболее значимых художественных музеев Финляндии, а также в фондах, общественных и частных коллекциях по всему миру.
