Large-scale textile installations form the recognizable artistic style of Tanya Akhmetgalieva. From the artist’s point of view, the idea of thread itself comes with the wide range of semantic meanings. She uses textile as the possibility to display the connections, relations appearing between people, their inner idea of themselves.
The artist in her installations, such as “Chrysalis phase”, “Incubator”, embroiders, knits, spreads the threads, connecting her characters with each other. The threads embody the words and thoughts which come from one character to another and transform the picture in the three-dimensional space.
Project “Incubator” (2010-2011) reflects our reality, the new century, a new stage which we have entered. The work focuses on the incubator where we see the premature baby – the metaphor reminding us “time of troubles” in which we live, about our world, which makes an emergency landing, a massive epidemic, war, crushing the revolution and other inside critical processes.
Project “Chrysalis phase” (2009) is devoted to the region of Siberia, Russia’s terra incognita. The image of Siberia by Akhmetgalieva takes allegoric features of a giant mythical cocoon, which is hiding in its chrysalis phase behind the layers of its threads the sources of the new time.
